Funmaxxing: An Unconventional Road to Success

The term “Funmaxxing” is commonly used on the internet, especially on platforms like TikTok, Instagram and X. Generation Z is credited as a creative community when it comes to new slang terms. Their inventiveness has resulted in terms like Funmaxxing. Although it is not an official word, the term maxxing is now recognized as an official slang suffix according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Funmaxxing contextually means optimizing having fun to the maximum capacity, almost humorously suggesting a carelessness and nonchalant attitude. The term has gained so much popularity that some have started to believe in it as an ideological lifestyle that leads to real life success.
Alysa Liu, an American figure skater with an interesting backstory, made headlines when she won the 2025 World Championship. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in Sports 2026. She started skating at the age of 5 and she retired from official Olympic skating when she was 16. Her reasoning was that she felt like it was a chore rather than an interest, so she did not see the reasoning for continuing.
She was hit with intense burnout and realized how much better she felt during Covid, when she did not skate anymore. Her reunion with skating was truly passionate for a change. On a random day, she went ice skating and genuinely enjoyed every moment as she felt nothing but freedom and fun. She realized, almost like an epiphany had hit her, that she would love to go back to skating under her own terms and solely for the love of it.
When she finally hit the skating rink, people watching her all over the world could feel her energy. Who was this larger than life personality who walked in and exuded positivity with every move? She was smiling and dancing to the music with so much passion and confidence as if there was no one else in the room, as if her dreams had already come true and she was celebrating in her own space where everyone else were but mere watchers.
Another striking detail is how she dances with style, not focusing only on the technicality of the dance but making sure every move while skating is enjoyable and makes her feel beautifully part of something she created. During the performance, the commentator mentioned that Alysa had said she does not care about the medal but the fun of the performance. The commentator added that if that is her attitude, it probably means the medal.
Her performance was an undeniable masterpiece which made people reevaluate the meaning of hard work. That isn’t to say that hard work does not pay off, but it suggests that passion and a person falling absolutely in love with what they do can be a much greater force at times. The secret ingredient in this delicious performance was nothing, except that it was made with love.
There is also a factor of humbleness that comes with such success. The fact that Alysa did not care for winning or attaining the Olympic Medal is a state of mind that isn’t easy to achieve. She cared about her internal self rather than an external projection meant to people please. She took control of herself through entertaining herself, having fun to her core and engraining joy into her efforts.
Funmaxxing might sound laughable, but it takes sweat and tears, years of struggling, getting humbled and getting back up stronger, finally gaining perspective on the reality of life yet dealing with it with love and grace. It takes nurturing and training the mind to funmaxx.
Her philosophy leans closely to a Stoic form of thinking, even closer to what Buddhists have preached for centuries. Such philosophies do not suggest that making fun the only priority will lead one to success or that one should build their life around fun alone. The actual purpose of ideas such as Stoicism is the lack of worrying, the power of acceptance and the importance of truly letting go, as a result gaining peace of mind. The tranquil state that is reached allows passion and joy to exist and conquer anxiety and worry.
Erling Haaland, one of the most famous football players in the world, has become popular among every generation for his individual character, sometimes more than his football persona. People find him funny for his cluelessness and down to earth energy, yet behind that personality is one of the most successful footballers of his generation. His achievements are endless: he is famous for his hat tricks, is Norway's top goalscorer, has won major trophies with Manchester City and holds remarkable scoring records.
People have started to notice that he isn’t too serious with himself. In interviews, when he’s asked how he achieved everything, he replies, “I don’t know.” His brutal striking and physical force across the field radiates a strong carefree dynamic that feels magical to watch.
He carries himself like a child while playing the sport obsessively, a performance that screams passion and pure joy. He also spends time making YouTube videos showing fans sneak peeks of his day-to-day life as a footballer. He has gained popularity for his humor, playfulness and normal interactions with people in these videos, as well as his humility that he himself doesn’t notice.
He mentioned he loves all the jokes about him on the internet and even likes to use social platforms to connect with fans through comments and random responses. The contradiction lies in the fact that characters who “funmaxx” are not actually intense or rigid at all. Even though Haaland has spoken of his immense love for football, he reflects a relaxed and composed demeanor that feels like a part of his nature.
The essence of true enthusiasm is serenity and complete peace. The way such peace is achieved is through real hardship and learning how to overcome it, sometimes learning the hard way and allowing the only way out to be through. Accepting momentary defeat and standing back up anyway is the balance that invites the fun and joy one has touched before back into their lives.
